Where I'm Coming From

Within the field of psychology and psychotherapy, there is the infamous "wounded healer".

There is something valuable about understanding the burden of grief, hopelessness, and alienation. I have been there, and I am here now to stand by your side from a place of compassion as you navigate the ups-and-down of making the decision to invest in yourself and your wellbeing, because you are worth it.  My approach has been informed by by life but is also informed by the person who stands before me.

I believe that the majority of mental health symptoms are rooted in past negative experiences, some might say trauma. These past negative experiences leave you with a tainted story that you tell yourself about who you are. Maybe it was a comment from a friend's parent that "should"  be minor but when you think about it now, it still makes you cringe. Maybe it was because you had to take care of yourself and your siblings and you still feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. These are simply examples to say that these past negative experiences can be small or they can be big but they impact how you think about yourself and the world around you they have left you with:

I know, because I have been there too. I practiced talk therapy for years, and it is a valuable part of therapy, but getting to the root of the issue is what is going to make the biggest difference now, and into the future. Together we can develop strategies to reduce your symptom, explore the reason they exist in the first place, and develop goals to help you get back to you.

Nature-Informed Therapy and  Creative Approaches

Focused on the present day, this approach is ideal for establishing goals, reducing symptoms, and identifying strategies and solutions that work for YOU. When using this approach in session, I  provide psychoeducation about mental health, the nervous system, development, attachment, and more, so that you can understand your symptoms and ways you might begin to address them. I invite you to engage in "experiments" as coined by Gestalt therapy, which lets you try out different ways of being so you can explore and be curious about the things that work for you, and the things that don't. Experiments may include mindfulness exercises, DBT skills, CBT, self-compassion, exposure therapy, nature-based exercises, and more.

EMDR is a titrated and gentle narrative, exposure, and somatic therapy. This therapy supports processing past negative experiences, addressing present-day challenges, and integrating the work into the future so you can live your most authentic and embodied life. This approach uses bilateral stimulation (including walking outdoors for a nature-informed approach) to stimulate your body's natural desire to heal itself. We develop a deep understanding of your personal narrative and use this to rewrite your story to one that is more constructive, compassionate, and supportive.

Nature-informed therapy is the icing on the cake in my practice. In the office, I bring nature to you by inviting the outdoors in with artwork, aromatherapy, the ambient sounds of nature, and a sensory basket inspired by nature. In session, wherever we meet, there is the opportunity to explore how to bring nature into your life more to reduce stress and improve your life. Sessions can also be conducted outdoors in Riverfront Park by my office, or with scheduling availability, one of the many trailheads across Spokane County. For clients who enjoy making art or who find it is easier to share when their hands are busy, I keep an ample supply of art supplies on hand for you to choose from. On top of all of this, one of my favorite ways for you to practice skills in session is through role-play and psychodrama. Another creative approach I lean on often is IFS. Some clients describe feeling like their personality is fractured, like there are "warring" parts of themselves. For clients struggling with this, I integrate parts work,  which comes from the therapy Internal Family Systems (IFS)
